New Casanova for Northern Ballet

12
Northern Ballet has announced a new ballet about the 18th century’s most notorious lover, Giacomo Casanova. Kenneth Tindall’s new production will have its premiere in Leeds in March 2017, followed by a UK tour.
Casanova’s 12-volume memoirs recall a scandalous life as a spy, scam artist, alchemist, church cleric and musician, but most of all as a lover. Tindall’s production, his first full-length ballet, will be set to a new score by film and television composer Kerry Muzzey. Tindall (pictured) will develop the scenario with Ian Kelly, who is an actor, dramatist and author of the 2008 biography of Casanova. The sets and costumes, evoking 18th-century Venice, will be by Tony and Olivier award-winning designer Christopher Oram, with lighting by Alastair West.
Tindall, who danced with Northern Ballet before concentrating on his career as a choreographer, has created works for John Neumeier’s Bundesjugendballett and English National Ballet’s Emerging Artist Award. For Northern Ballet, his works include Project #1,Luminous Junc-tureand The Architect.
Tindall said: “I am thrilled that my first full-length ballet will be with Northern Ballet, a company that holds a special place for me. Casanova lived a life far richer and stranger than most fictions and the physicality, theatricality and energy of his exploits make him a perfect subject for the stage.”
The production will have its premiere performances at the Grand Theatre, Leeds from March 11 to 18, 2017. It will tour to seven UK venues in spring 2017, with further venues to be announced for the autumn. For more information, visit northernballet.com.
